Volos is one of the largest and most beautiful cities in Greece, located in the center of the country and its port is one of the busiest in Greece. Built at the most inner point of the Pagasitikos Gulf, Volos is located at the foot of Pelion, where the fresh and salty sea breeze is mixed with the fragrant mountain air of the homeland of the mythical Centaurs.

The city was the starting point of the ancient famous campaign of Jason and the Argonauts, which is one of the most famous chapters of Greek Mythology. The richness of the region and its long history are reflected in its architectural structure, which has an air of elegance and beauty. Large residences and state buildings, museums, industrial facilities of the early 20th century and historical churches are some of the main points of the city.

Along with ancient history, the amazing natural environment and its important port, Volos is famous throughout Greece for its traditional tsipouradika, where Greek tsipouro with local delicacies is served. In fact, in this small town of just 150,000 inhabitants, you will find almost 600 of these emblematic tsipouradika!

The seat of the University of Thessaly is also lacated in Volos. The university was founded in 1954 is and gave new life to the city, enhancing its vitality and dynamism, as well as evolving it as a city over the years.

history

The history

Volos is a rich city in terms of its history and archaeological treasures. Although the current city of Volos is not very old, its foundations were laid in the middle of the nineteenth century in place of the ancient and legendary cities of Demetrias, the Pagases, the homeland of Jason the Argonauts and Iolkos. Two years after the liberation of Thessaly, in 1883, the Municipality of Pagason was founded, which was renamed as Municipality of Volos in 1954. The development of the city until the first postwar years was rapid. The favourable location, the port and the construction of the railway played an important role in the development of crafts, agriculture, industry and the economic, cultural and social flourishing of the country. One of the reasons why Volos attracts many visitors is the fact that it is located near the legendary Pelion, which is said to be the home of the Centaur Chiron and serves as a good base for those who want to explore this surrounding area. Today Volos is an important industrial center and will enchant you with the city complex and the third largest port of Greece. The city's economy is based on commerce, industry, crafts and tourism. A modern city with cultural flourishing, intellectual creation that harmoniously reconciles the neoclassical with the modern architectural element.

Makrinitsa

Athanasakio Archaeological Museum of Volos

The Athanasakio Archaeological Museum of Volos was built in 1909 and, in its 7 exhibition spaces, hosts many exquisite findings from the beginning of the 20th century until the modern archaeological excavations in Thessaly. The exhibits include objects from the Neolithic settlements of Dimini and Sesklo, the first Neolithic settlement in Europe, as well as a wide variety of objects from Ancient Greece. It is one of the oldest museums in the country and attracts a large number of visitors every year - adults and children!

Tsipouradika

Tsipouradika is the trademark of Volos! Known all over Greece, even abroad, they are definitely worth a visit! The "habit" of the tsipouradiko was born in Volos around the 19th century, when employees felt the need to have a place near their work, so they gathered there to take their lunch break. Hence, small shops started to spring up, serving simple delicacies at good prices, accompanied by tsipouro. And that brings us to today, where Volos is home to over 600 tsipouradika, where people keep gathering and enjoying delicious meze, fine tsipouro and good company! What else could anyone ask for?

Konservolia Piliou Volou

Konservolia Piliou Volou is a variety of olives with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), which is found in the province of Volos. The Mediterranean climate, combined with the dry summers and mild winters of the region, make this olive variety stand out and the olive trees fill fruit. The fruit is harvested by hand, either while the olives are still green or when they have matured, at the point they have got a purple to black color. They are then transported to a factory where they are processed and then salted. Their taste is fruity and relatively sweet and are a great pairing to dishes with cheeses and salads.

Tsitsiravla

Tsitsiravla is the meze-symbol of Volos and you will find in this dish in any tsipouradiko you may find yourself. It looks a lot like capers and is actually a pickle from the young shoots of a wild peanut species. The shoots of this shrub are harvested in spring, from March to May. Being fresh, the sprouts are scalded, then they stay for a few hours in brine, then they are transferred to vinegar and finally, to olive oil. Some of them, uh, merry-go-rounds, put fennel and garlic in the jar for more perfume. If you like them a lot, you can also find them in jars to take them with you on your way back and remember your wonderful holiday in Volos!

Kolitsiani of Volos (sea anemones)

Another tsipouro meze that you will find in the menus of the traditional tsipouradika of Volos are the "κolitsiani". There's a sea flower on your plate! Κolitsiani (sea anemones) can be found in every tsipouradiko and is a dish far from the tourist menu and givens. As difficult as these marine plants are to harvest, they are as delicious when cooked. Their recipe is simple. Once they are harvested from the sea rocks, they are rinsed with plenty of water, floured, fried and served warm and crispy to accompany your tsipouro! Their story takes us back a long way, to years of poverty, where the locals would pick whatever plant was edible in order to create an affordable but nutritious meal.
