history

The history

Warsaw has a long and rich history that attracts visitors from all over the world. The city was founded about 1,300 years ago near the Vistula River and has since emerged as a cultural and economic center of Europe. During the Middle Ages, Warsaw developed around the castle of the Dukes of Masovia, in a small area. In the 14th century, it became the capital of Poland and gained an important position in trade and the arts. During the 18th century, Warsaw went through various conquests. However, in the 19th century, it was revitalized and became a city of culture and science. During World War II, Warsaw suffered heavy destruction as it was occupied by the Nazis. Despite the destruction, the city underwent a remarkable restoration after the war. Today, Warsaw is a modern city combining its traditional heritage with modern architecture. The Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its medieval alleys and stone-built buildings. The city also has impressive museums, such as the Warsaw Museum, which tells the history and culture of the city through art and exhibits. Nature lovers can enjoy the city's gardens and parks, such as Lazienki Park.

Warsaw

Old Town (Stare Miasto)

It is the city's historical centre and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was developed during the Middle Ages and restored after World War II. The cobbled streets, beautiful buildings and traditional restaurants make it a magical area for strolling.

Warsaw Royal Castle (Zamek Królewski)

It was the official seat of the Polish monarchy and is located in the Castle Square (Plac Zamkowy), at the entrance to the Old Town of Warsaw. The personal offices of the king and the administrative offices of the king of Poland were there from the 16th century until the partitions of Poland. It has been restored after World War II and internally hosts museums presenting Polish history and culture.

Lazienki Park (Łazienki Park)

This beautiful park-garden is one of Warsaw's largest. It includes the palace on the water, the monument to Frederic Chopin and many other sculptural and architectural values.

Palace of Culture and Science (Pałac Kultury i Nauki)

This tall tower was a gift from the Soviet Union to Warsaw and is the tallest building in Poland. It is a classic example of the socialist realist style, and you can enjoy fantastic views of the city from its top.

Pierogi

Pierogi is one of the best-known Polish delicacies. They are small fried, semicircular pieces of pasta with various fillings such as meat, mashed potatoes, mushrooms, cabbage and onion. They are usually accompanied by sour cream or caramelized onions. Their history dates back centuries, when they became popular as food that could be stored for long periods of time.

Bigos

Bigos is a traditional Polish food known as "Polish kaserol". It is a hearty food with pork, sausage, sauerkraut, fresh cabbage, dried mushrooms, onions, prunes and many aromatic spices. It is usually served with mashed potatoes. The roots of bigos can be traced back to medieval Polish cuisine and the attempt to incorporate various ingredients to create delicious food.

Zurek

Zurek is a Polish soup made from rice or barley flour, usually with sausages, eggs, and fresh cream. It is a nutritious soup with a strong flavor and is served in bread. Originally, it was called the “Easter Zurek” and was used as food during the Easter season. It is now a popular dish all year round.
